The Sons of Toil Foundation was founded by third and fourth generation master masons and master craftsmen, inspired to form their Foundation from the present and ever-growing necessity for qualified tradesmen, and the extreme lack thereof, in the United States workforce. The founders of the Sons of Toil Foundation have endured strict apprenticeships in several trades from seasoned Master Craftsmen, carrying on generations of traditions and training persons, passing on their knowledge. The main purpose of our Foundation is to pass on traditional building methods, the trades, to the willing, by the means of an apprenticeship program, unite apprentice, journeyman and master craftsmen with our Craftsmen’s Guild, support our soldiers with our outreach program, and help those who are in need. The majority of Master to Apprentice teaching is usually family oriented, not available to the majority. Our program opens the doors for all persons interested in learning a trade in the traditional manor, a traditional apprenticeship program. Learning is primarily achieved by on the job training and instruction from Master Craftsmen. All learning and teaching takes place on projects built by our Foundation, serving two purposes; a classroom, and a fundraiser to fund the Apprenticeship Program. We are practitioners and advocates of safe, engineered, green, energy efficient building. Safe building is building smart for effective preparedness in disaster prone regions. Water conservation is achieved by the use of water cisterns and reclaimed water. Our Foundation’s Programs include researching, testing and using new alternative building methods and renewable energy to combine quality craftsmanship and energy efficiency in learning a trade. Emphasis on strict workmanship and safe, green, energy efficient building is paramount. This dedication will result in an increased amount of energy savings through increased future green and energy efficient building, overall reducing energy consumption locally, regionally and nationally in the United States, a standard that should be mandatory today. Our programs are based on generations of experience and knowledge. These programs will allow Apprentices to one day become Masters, thus passing their trade on, ultimately repeating itself generation after generation to come. Our Foundation will help improve the quality of craftsmanship in the work force of the United States. |
Our Apprenticeship Program stresses the traditional, disciplined methods of learning a trade, centuries old. Our program is voluntary and open to all races, creeds and genders, with certain requirements, for example: must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency. Pay rates are adjustable according to current state employment rates, apprentices make minimum wage during their training period. We have an initial two week try-out period, Orientation that all prospective students must attend and pass in order to become an apprentice. This period is a test of physical and mental tolerance, a right of passage, used to separate the serious students from the rest. All apprentices must complete Orientation and the General Laborer Program before moving to a specialized trade. In the General Laborer Program students learn jobsite basics, how a job “works” and the general operation and methods behind all of the trades. After completing this Program, students will be able to safely work on a jobsite, take direction, and perform a variety of Laborer’s duties and are actually ready to work in the workforce if desired. Our Program will promote discipline, physical and mental fitness, manors, character, ethics and self worth to its students; this will improve the persona of the American Worker to be positive, reliable and superior. With a higher percentage of skilled workers, corporations will produce their products more efficiently, thus increasing their bottom line resulting in higher profits and with the possibility of increasing employees’ wages overall. |

Sons of Toil Foundation - Apprenticeship Program Development An important aspect of any program or organization is its funding. Because of our Foundation’s business model, we are an asset to the economy, not a debt. Below is a simple model of our organization’s operation (see fig. 1). Our organization does not depend on any funding other than donations for a chance to win the homes or projects we use in the process of teaching in our Apprenticeship Program. This means, important, city or state budgeted funds are not disturbed and individuals receive an opportunity to own a home perhaps that could never own a home of their own. Our program is important to the future of the American worker, housing industry and energy conservation, (70% of electricity used in the U.S. is used by homes); with support from our city, state and country, there will be hope and a future for the American worker. Our Foundation and Model is a commerce generator. We take unskilled persons, (also available to the homeless, aiding that epidemic) train them with a skill; we are providing jobs in a declining industry and improving the students’ abilities to obtain better employment. We are also providing employment and job opportunities for journeymen and master tradesmen. The actual construction an energy efficient home will greatly impact local material and equipment suppliers through the purchasing of materials, as well as being a model for energy conservation. We are stimulating the construction and housing markets with each and every project we undertake. With time and planning, additional chapters of the Sons of Toil Foundation can be formed in every major city in the United States, increasing the benefits offered by our programs, nationally. Not to limit our outreach to our community, the Sons of Toil Foundation supports and actively participates with numerous local 501c3 organizations, charities and churches that deal with feeding the hungry and homeless, disadvantaged inner city youth, animal rescue and those who are in need. A recent example of our outreach to those who are in need Sons of Toil Foundation have been helping a family that has recently been dealing with their eight year old daughter being diagnosed with Leukemia. The Sons of Toil arranged for an entire new air conditioning system to be replaced and installed at their home, a new electrical service, (updated and now to code) and new carpeting installed in the home; all a necessity for her infliction. This is our Craftsman’s Guild in action; the air conditioning and electrical was performed by members of this committee. Our Foundation is currently working on establishing a fund to help aid her and her family with medical bills. We also assisted and participated in a local fundraiser by supplying and cooking food to raise funds. SONS OF TOIL FOUNDATION BENEFITS
